After their hugely successful album Sigh No More, Mumford and Sons have definitely been overdue for a sophomore album release. Babel will certainly satisfy the craving fans have had for new material by the indie-folk band. They kept their passionate tone in their music, as well as in their lyrics – and of course, this includes their banjo and mandolin instrumentals.
“I Will Wait,” is the first single off the album, and is very radio appropriate and satisfying in that it builds up to the burst of folksy strings during the chorus. Other great songs off the album include “Below My Feet,” which is a very relaxing track to listen to, one for a rainy Sunday.
On a more upbeat note, “Lover of the Light” and the title track, “Babel,” both have the exciting punch that Mumford and Sons have mastered. As a bonus track on the deluxe release of the album, “Where Are You Now” is remarkable for those days when a box of chocolates is a must. While all of the songs on this album are truly lovely, these are just some that are definitely worth a listen.
This album, to many, may have a lot of biblical tones and references; to others it could be relatable on a different level. It really depends on the interpretation. While the London, England natives kept a familiar sound to their first album, Babel offers more complex songs that existing and new fans will be intrigued by. First-time listeners may however, find this album slightly repetitive, though it still delivers that unique punch that comes along with their choice of instruments.
All in all, Babel is definitely a great album to check out if you’re on the hunt for some new tunes.
