Movie review: “Enough Said” is an underrated gem

Tom Richardson, Staff Writer

Every year, a good film will go unnoticed. Whether the marketing wasn’t emphasized, or not enough people were aware of it, no one will really know why certain films succeed, while others bomb. In 2013, there was a well-received independent romantic comedy that got praised by critics, but wasn’t the biggest box office success.  Not many people even seemed aware of this film ever having come out. The underrated masterpiece was “Enough Said.”

This indie film gem centered on a divorced wife and mother, named Eva (Julia Louis-Dreyfus), who’s daughter is about to head off to college. This means that Eva is about to have her home all to herself. Eva gets invited to a party before her daughter officially heads off to college, where she meets a lady named Marianne (Catherine Keener) and a nice man named Albert (James Gandolfini). Eva later goes on a few dates with Albert, and things seem to be going great for a while. While dating Albert, Eva also likes to spend time with Marianne. But while spending time with her, Eva learns about Marianne’s rough divorce with her ex-husbamd—who turns out to be Albert. Things start to take a dark and comedic turn for Eva, when some of Marianne’s negative perceptions of Albert slowly become Eva’s perception of Albert.

“Enough Said” has a good understanding of people’s behaviors, people’s relationships, and just a very good and accurate perception of real-life in general. The film’s hilarious jokes never become tiresome, the romance scenes feel real and effective, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus and James Gandolfini have some great acting chemistry in this film.

“Enough Said” is easily one of the best films of 2013. The film is currently available on DVD and blu-ray to buy, and is available for digital download through certain web sources.
