‘Captain America 2: The Winter Soldier’ a Marvel to see
April 9, 2014
Assigning two lesser-known film directors to a big budget superhero film can always be risky. With a film studio as big as “Marvel Studios,” and with such a well-known comic book series like “Captain America,” there is already a lot of high expectations that people will have, going into this film. Luckily for “Marvel Studios,” assigning the lesser-known Anthony Russo and Joe Russo to direct this film, was a fantastic choice. Captain America has returned to the big screen once again, in the latest Marvel Sequel “Captain America 2: The Winter Soldier.”
In this film, Steve Rogers; a.k.a. Captain America (Chris Evans), is trying to adjust to the modern world, after the events of 2012’s “The Avengers.” Steve has since been working closely with an organization called “S.H.I.E.L.D.,” he works as an agent for their missions, using his super-soldier abilities, for tasks that might be harder for an ordinary S.H.I.E.L.D. agent to do. But Steve begins to question if he can trust S.H.I.E.L.D. after awhile, when his S.H.I.E.L.D. director Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) gets accused of being untrustworthy, and is a target of a mysterious assassin known as “The Winter Soldier.” After being attacked himself, Steve Rogers turns to Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) and Falcon (Anthony Mackie), both modern-day soldiers and friends of his, to figure out why S.H.I.E.L.D. has instantly become so dark and power-hungry, and how and why they might have some back-stabbers amongst this organization.
For Marvel comic fans who felt that the characters of Nick Fury and Black Widow were under-developed in previous Marvel films; they will be very happy this time around, as this new “Captain America” film gives both characters plenty of neat things to do. Black Widow even tries to help Captain America find a date in certain scenes of this film, and the end-result is appropriately adorable. Marvel comic fans will also love all the comic book homages to other characters and stories, within the Marvel universe. “Captain America 2” is not only a great superhero film, but it also works great as an espionage film. The film blends both genres very well together. The film also does a terrific job with representing how big of an impact that Captain America has made on the U.S., as Steve Rogers visits a museum at one point in the film that celebrates everything that Captain America has done.
“Captain America 2: The Winter Soldier” rarely runs into problems for the most part. Some viewers might dislike some of the occasional overly-cheesy action scenes, and some might find some of the storyline solutions to be a little too convenient at times. Putting those two nit-picks aside, this truly is a terrific Marvel comic film, that many will love.
For fans of “Captain America,” and for fans of Marvel comics in general, “Captain America 2: The Winter Soldier” is one superhero film that must be seen immediately.
