Netflix review: movies for Christmas break

Nora Finnerty, Staff Writer

It’s winter break and you’re scrolling through Netflix; sleeping-in has become a habit, ‘chilling’ is your everyday agenda, and making that cozy, semi-permanent indent on your couch is a well-executed practice.
The challenge is real when it comes to finding anything truly good on Netflix anymore, at least something that you haven’t already seen a million and one times. If you find yourself in the impossible position to choose, check out some of the following recommendations:

Love Actually
This charming holiday romantic comedy tells 10 intertwining love stories that will make you laugh while getting you into the holiday spirit. The cast is laden with tried and true talent such as Kiera Knightly and Hugh Grant and is a true holiday classic.

If you find yourself browsing the many options of Netflix with a significant other, this may score you some major points.

Anchorman 2
The predecessor to the acclaimed “Anchorman” movie comes to Netflix on Dec. 6. Your favorite San Diego newsman returns to take New York’s first 24-hour news channel by storm. An added bonus: You can skip your ab workout; you’ll laugh off all of those extra pounds you’ve accumulated this holiday season.

Breakfast Club
If you haven’t already seen this old classic, make sure you find time to watch it over break. Five teens from an array of social groups find common ground while sitting through a Saturday detention. This John Hughes flick is circa 1985, so be ready for the acid wash jeans, scrunchies and shoulder pads. Nostalgia comes free of charge.

Almost Famous
Ever dreamed of following a famous band around the country? Well now you can do it vicariously through William, a 15-year-old journalist writing for Rolling Stone. William follows the band Stillwater in the 70’s and gets to experience “life on the road.”

You’ve Got Mail
If you are looking for a romantic classic, this is the movie for you. Set in New York City around Christmas time, Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan will melt your cold Wisconsin heart with their unlikely love story. A great choice for a warm and cozy Netflix date.

Food Inc.
If you start to miss learning while you are on your long, lazy winter break, then Food Inc. is a good choice.  This quite shocking Oscar-nominated documentary will perhaps give you some perspective on our nation’s food industry and the impacts it has on our health and our environment.

Uganda Be Kidding Me
If you like raunchy stand-up comedy, then the Netflix special featuring Chelsea Lately is one to make sure ends up on your ‘recently watched’ list. Chelsea recounts her trip to Africa without
sparing you any of the dirty details.

Blue Valentine
This one goes out to the indie movie fans, as well as the Ryan Gosling gushers. This movie is about a couple in modern day that are at an impasse in their marriage. It charts their relationship from the beginning,
showing the romance and possibility their love once had. Warning: It’s a rather deep movie, so make sure to have tissues ready to go.

Django
This 2013 Best Original Screenplay Oscar winner is a must-see. Set in 1853, Django, a freed slave, helps a German bounty hunter in exchange for help finding Django’s wife and gaining their freedom. It wouldn’t be a Quentin Tarintino film without some violence, so be prepared for some cringe-worthy scenes.

World War Z
If you love the zombie craze, then this film will be right up your alley. This apocalyptic movie stars Brad Pitt as he fights to stop the zombie pandemic. A forewarning: make sure you have a hand to hold or a pillow to squeeze; these zombies are fast and scary.
