After years of waiting, I finally experienced Hairball live at the Rice Lake Aquafest this past summer. As a passionate fan of classic rock and tribute bands, my excitement was palpable. However, while the evening had its highlights, I found myself feeling a mix of happiness and disappointment as the performances didn’t quite live up to the expectations I had built over the years.
The concert began with an air of anticipation. Hairball is known for their electrifying shows, and I was eager to dive into a night filled with iconic rock anthems. The lineup featured a variety of classic rock hits, with Dave stepping into the role of Gene Simmons from KISS, while Kris embodied Paul Stanley. Drew brought Ozzy Osbourne to life, and throughout the night, we were treated to performances of songs from Whitesnake, Twisted Sister, Journey, Queen, AC/DC, Guns N’ Roses, Alice Cooper, Def Leppard, Mötley Crüe, and Bon Jovi.
While the set list was impressive and nostalgic, I couldn’t help but feel that the execution lacked the energy and excitement I had hoped for. Each performance felt as though it were missing a certain spark, leaving me longing for more.
One of the standout elements of the show was Hairball’s heartfelt tribute to our active duty service members, veterans and Gold Star families. This recognition added a meaningful layer to the concert, resonating deeply with many audience members, including myself. It was a powerful reminder of the significance of music in honoring those who serve our country.
After the show, I had the opportunity to meet Drew, Dave, HBK and Happy. They were genuinely nice and approachable. Their willingness to connect with fans was heartwarming, showcasing their appreciation for the support they receive. However, despite this positive interaction, I couldn’t shake the feeling that the overall performance left something to be desired.
I must extend big props to Michael, the guitarist. His passion and talent shone through, adding a layer of enjoyment that I appreciated amidst my mixed feelings about the concert.
Throughout the night, I met some wonderful fans who had attended multiple Hairball shows and had grown up with the band. Their enthusiasm for the music was infectious, and it was fantastic to share stories and experiences with fellow fans. However, my excitement was somewhat dampened by the treatment I received from Aquafest employees regarding photography. I was supposed to have a media pass, but it never materialized. This unfortunate situation left me feeling frustrated as I tried to capture memories of the night.
In search of a more fulfilling experience, I attended another Hairball show at a different venue, hoping for redemption. Unfortunately, the meet-and-greet experience was once again disappointing. For the $160+ us fans spent, I expected a more personal interaction, but it felt rushed and impersonal. We were allowed only three pictures, and the exchange was limited to a quick hello and goodbye. This lack of connection was disheartening, especially given the amount spent on the experience.
Additionally, the “VIP” viewing area left much to be desired. Positioned at the side of the stage, it quickly became clear that the band paid little attention to the VIP guests, focusing instead on the general admission crowd. Many fans in the VIP section voiced their frustration, especially considering the high price of the tickets. While the venue staff were accommodating and friendly, Hairball’s performance felt repetitive and uninspired.
Reflecting on both concerts, I find myself caught between the joy of experiencing live music and the disappointment of unmet expectations. I had been looking forward to seeing Hairball for years, and while I appreciated the moments of connection and the heartfelt tributes, the overall experience did not live up to the hype I had envisioned.
In conclusion, while there were moments of happiness in meeting the band and connecting with fellow fans, the overall experience left me wanting more. Hairball has the potential to deliver unforgettable performances, and I would be open to giving them another chance in the future. For now, I find myself reflecting on what could have been, hopeful that someday I will witness a Hairball concert that truly captures the excitement and energy I have always anticipated.
