Madison College Comedy Club (M3C) hosts a standup comedy open mic every Friday 12-2p in the cafeteria. M3C put on a show last year in the Black Box theater with local talent Mo B of www.blackcrowncomedy.
M3C began last October as the brainchild of Shravya Purohit, a hospitality student and standup who tours in India, and Kristine Gallagher, professionally known as MOMic, a local standup/anti-comic and journalism student.
As many immigrants must work long hours to afford to live stateside, Shravya was missing all the open mics around town, which is what you need to attend in for the chance to get on shows and perform on bigger stages, notably Comedy on State.
MOMic already had purchased equipment for the downtown open mic she cohosts with her daughter, which was started with another comic friend, UK/Moroccan Ayman Kalada.
Shravya and MOMic collaborated with Sean Green, associate student program advisor of Student Life to launch the club. Shravya went on two shows after the one at Madison College in May.
MOMic considers herself a no-show comic, which has nothing to do with her work ethic.
She enjoys comedy and enjoys having fun while watching others’ voices grow and get stronger, mostly those often absent.
She is a Lady Laughs Comedy School graduate run by Alder Dina Nina Martinez close to campus. MOMic’s been active in and out of “The Scene” since the fall of 2021 and runs another open mic at Delta Beer Lab: Crafting for Change on Madison’s Southside.
The club offers Laffy Taffy and laugh tracks to encourage budding comics to get their feet wet.
“We need more laughter around here,” said Provost Dr. Beth Giles-Klinkner. Yes, it sure does!
