The Madison College Racial Equity Summit Series has organized an event titled “Illustrating Inequalities, Unmasking Biases,” which features several guest speakers discussing representation in textbooks and education. It will take place in Truax campus room D1630 on Sept. 13 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., with livestreaming options available for attendees who cannot make the in-person presentations.
The event will start with a presentation by Chidiebere Ide, an author and advocate for representation in medicine, who will delve into aspects of inclusion in the healthcare industry, particularly in medical references and educational materials.
Continuing into the early afternoon, Dr. Crystasany Turner and Dr. Michele Turner will present on inequalities in teacher prep textbooks based on their analysis of racial bias in teachers’ preparation materials. They will address issues such as normalization of middle-class white perspectives, while providing insight for how to teach and learn without contributing or falling victim to problematic biases.
