The Madison College Racial Equity Summit Series presents, “Unlocking Voices,” an event featuring two guests speaking on linguistic equity. The event will take place on Tuesday Oct. 31, from 12 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. in Truax Room D1630BC. Food will be provided for those who register in advance.
During the first 45 minutes of the event, Susanne Trieber, a Madison College Academic Manager, will share information about her current research project and how working on it has made her committed to a more inclusive campus environment. She will speak on linguistic inclusivity, providing ideas and insight for individuals to ensure everyone’s voice is heard.
For the remainder of the event, George Paasewe, founder of The Code-Switcher, will present about and facilitate activities relating to code switching. Code-switching, meaning to change one’s mannerisms and speech based on context of a situation, can affect people’s identities and influence interactions particularly among diverse communities. Paasewe will explain how code-switching affects people’s personal and cultural identities and their feeling of belonging.
