The Four Lakes Anthropological Society (FLAS) has three primary goals: 1. Foster the relevancy of Anthropology in society today. 2. Provide hands-on and active engagement in anthropological pursuits. 3. Create bridges and facilitate conversation between like-minded communities.
Who can join your club? Membership is open to all Madison College faculty, staff, and students.
When and where does the club meet? The FLAS meets at noon on the fourth Friday of every month in the Atrium near the cafeteria.
What are some of the events and activities your club hosts throughout the year? The FLAS sponsors and hosts ancient technologies workshops and demonstrations, provides tours of local archaeological sites, sponsors field trips to anthropological institutions such as the Field Museum in Chicago, the Milwaukee Public Museum and the Wisconsin Historical Society. We also organize and host An Evening with Artifacts where students, avocational and vocational archeologists and local institutions present their archaeological collections and research.
Why should students join this club? The FLAS is for all who want to learn about what it means to be human. Our hands-on activities help students to reflect on the world we live in and the world we have come from. We encourage everyone to learn ancient technologies (for example, making stone tools, pottery, fire starting, drilling, making baskets and cordage), visit archaeological sites, and explore museums, all of which we believe all these opportunities promote understanding and celebrate human diversity. FLAS is open to everyone who wants to participate in a wonderful community and explore what Anthropology has to offer!
