Hispanic Heritage Month is a month-long celebration starting on September 15 and ending on October 15. This time of year is meant to shine a light on Hispanic and Latino culture through all manners of music, art, food, and more.
Through clubs, events and activities, Madison College allows students to express and celebrate the approaching festivities. Here’s what we know so far:
Decorate and Celebrate
Intercultural Exchange will be hosting an on-campus event on Wednesday of this week, September 11. Students will gather to decorate the club’s room and engage in friendly banter with each other.
Intercultural Exchange is always open to new members and is happy to welcome whoever drops by. Luis Hernandez, a student worker for Intercultural Exchange, says it’s a delight to see new faces. “When a lot of people fill up this tiny room, everyone feels like a big family, smiling and laughing together. It’s beautiful in a way.”
This event will be held at the Truax Campus, room C1430 at 2:30 p.m. Sign up on Wolfpack Connect.
The Kick Off event
La Raza Unida and United Common Ground have partnered together to host The Hispanic Heritage Month Kick Off event. Members of both groups—and all others who wish to attend—will learn how to play Loteria, chat with their peers, enjoy the provided lunch, and watch a live performance of dancers.
Fernando Ponce Romero, a prominent member of La Raza, says this event is one of the most popular. “There was a pretty good turn out last year. Over 100 students stopped by, some staff too. They were all smiling, maybe that’s because of the food. Regardless, I think everyone really liked it.”
At The Kick Off event, there will be Mariachi Band, Trivia and an appearance by the Boilvian Dancers. Both La Raza and United Common Ground would be grateful for anyone willing to volunteer. Contact either of the club leaders for details.
This event will be held on September 18 from 11 a.m. to 2p.m at the Truax Campus. See Wolfpack Connect for more details.
