During Campus Safety Awareness Month, the Madison College Public Safety Office reminds you to always stay aware of your surroundings and be prepared for emergencies. Knowing these procedures can make a significant difference in ensuring your safety and the safety of others during a crisis. Stay safe and look out for each other on campus.  

Fire Safety  

• Fires can spread quickly, so it’s crucial to be prepared. Here’s what you need to know:  

• Know Your Exits: Familiarize yourself with the nearest fire exits and routes.  

• If you see a fire or smoke: Evacuate the area & pull the fire alarm if not already sounding.  

• Smoke Alarms: If an alarm sounds, use the nearest exit or alternate safe route.  

• Don’t Use Elevators: In the event of a fire, use stairwells to exit the building. Elevators can become inoperative or unsafe during a fire.  

• All clear: Do not return to the building until “ALL CLEAR” is given.  

Shelter-in-Place  

Sometimes it’s safer to stay indoors rather than evacuate. Here’s how to handle a shelter-in-place situation:  

• Stay Informed: Sign-up for WolfPack Alerts. 

• Find a Safe Location: Choose an interior room or hallway without windows if possible.  

• Remain Calm: Stay inside until you receive an “ALL CLEAR” or further instructions from emergency services.  

Evacuation Procedures  

Evacuation may be necessary in various emergencies. Follow these guidelines to ensure a safe exit:  

• Follow Instructions: Listen to Public Safety or emergency responders. They provide crucial directions and information.  

• Leave Belongings Behind: In a hurry, focus on leaving quickly. Don’t waste time gathering personal items.  

• Assist Others: Help those who may need assistance, such as individuals with disabilities.  

• All clear: Do not return to the building until “ALL CLEAR” is given.
