Madison College Student Program Advisor Scarlet Martino and the Student Voter Awareness team attended the Wisconsin Student Voting Summit this past weekend at Milwaukee Area Technical College (MATC) to learn how to increase student voter awareness by engaging and educating young voters.
The Student Voter Awareness Team included Martino, Senate President Kai Brito, Lina DeMarte and Jonah Gulisano.
The team participated in small group activities, like creating poetry to create a collective vision for a better Wisconsin, and heard from various speakers, including spoken word artist Jonah Denae.
Other workshops attended included increasing civic engagement at community colleges, navigating difficult political conversations and best practices for engaging students regarding voter awareness.
The keynote speaker was Beauregard Patterson of the Fair Elections Center (FEC) Voting Rights Project.
During the break, students appeared on camera to discuss their election issues.
The summit was sponsored by the FEC, which empowers students with the information they need to register and vote. In 2012, the FEC launched the Campus Vote Project (CVP) to focus and expand its work on student voting issues.
Since then, the Campus Vote Project has worked to normalize and institutionalize student voting by working directly with colleges and universities nationwide.
