The Clarion won first place in the Best of Show completion among two-year college newspapers and newsmagazines at the Associated Collegiate Press National College Media Convention in New Orleans on Nov. 2.
The award was one of 13 the Madison College student newspaper received at the event. Seven were Best of Show awards, five were Associated Collegiate Press individual awards and one was a Pacemaker recognition.
In the Best of Show competition, The Clarion three staff awards and four individual awards.
Editor in Chief Kelly Feng won third place Best of Show for feature writing for her article about Jovhany Michaud’s excitement about being a first-time voter.
Graphic designer Neph Demott won fourth place Best of Show in advertising for an advertisement promoting the Yahara Journal’s Scary Story Contest.
Photographer Hunter Radke won eighth place Best of Show in sports photography for a shot from a men’s soccer match this fall.
Staff member Kodiak Koessl won seventh place Best of Show for broadcast news programs for a video highlighting the Top 5 stories from the Oct. 23, 2024, issue.
In addition to its first place Best of Show award for two-year newspapers and newsmagazines, The Clarion won third place in two-year digital newsletters and fifth place for two-year websites.
Associated Collegiate Press individual awards were presented to five students for work from the 2023-24 school year.
Kai Brito won third place reporter of the year for two-year schools. The selection was based on a sample of four articles he wrote throughout the year.
Kelly Feng placed third in the Ernie Pyle Human Interest Competition for a profile she wrote about Madison College student Flore Nikiema.
Photographer Ethan James placed third in the sports game/action photo competition for a photograph he took from a WolfPack softball game.
Writer Claire Liddicoat placed fourth in the column writing category for a column she wrote about the Supreme Court’s affirmative action ruling and its impact on colleges and universities.
Designer Michelle Meyer received honorable mention recognition for design in the newspaper page/spread category for an Arts section page she designed.
Finally, The Clarion was named a Pacemaker Award finalist for newspapers and newsmagazines. It was the 13th time The Clarion has been a Pacemaker finalist for its print edition or website.
