The Yahara Journal is hosting a poetry reading with the guest author Matt Hart on Nov 14 at the Studio Theatre at 2:30. Hart is the author of five books of poems and teaches at the Cincinnati Art Academy. This will be the first time he reads at the Madison College campus.
Hart was brought to campus by Matt Guenette, a creative writing instructor at Madison College. Guenette praises Hart’s work emphatically.
“His poems are not just about himself, they’re about seeing. They are about realizing that you’re just this small part of this huge, interconnected fabric that’s almost impossible to make sense of.”
Hart has been a singer in several bands and uses that performative talent when he reads his poetry. His father was a preacher, and that sound shows up in his rhythm, combined with the punk genre.
“Matt’s poems don’t have pretense. There’s an explosive quality, they feel really spontaneous and that’s one of the illusions of his work. He wants it to feel lived and living,” says Guenette.
A Matt Hart reading is an opportunity to see how powerfully meaningful language can be. Even if you think you don’t like poetry, this is a whole experience, one that might inspire a new appreciation for the art. Come to the Studio Theater at 2:30 on Nov 14 for a new perspective on life.
