In August, Madison College announced a new policy to protect students’ personal information amid the surge in phishing attacks. After some initial technical challenges, the college is ready to implement the policy.
On Feb. 3, the college began de-provisioning legacy student mailboxes. These mailboxes belong to students who have not enrolled in a class in the previous four semesters.
The college currently maintains 270,000 Microsoft Exchange mailboxes for both current and former students. By limiting exchange online mailboxes to only those students who have been enrolled in the last four terms, it expects to reduce the total mailbox count by nearly 230,000. This change will significantly decrease the school’s exposure to potential attacks and reduce the time staff need to support and maintain the email service.
To effectively communicate this with the students, multiple messages have been delivered to students with legacy mailboxes informing them of the de-provisioning of their mailboxes. These messages included links to knowledgebase articles in the FAQ document below explaining their options for exporting mail items.
