After months of delay, the Truax campus is offering free healthcare on campus. There is now a health clinic that has been built adjacent to the vet tech area near the corner of Anderson and Stoughton road.
“We’re really excited,” said Scot Vesterdahl, Health, Fitness and Recreation advisor. “We are looking to bring healthcare back to the college.”
This project has been a top priority of the college because the college is striving for a healthy student body in hopes of increasing the school’s retention rate.
“If you look at the success and retention of our students, obviously that is going to be a little easier if they are healthy,” Vesterdahl said.
After the Student Senate passed a resolution to bring a clinic to Madison Area Technical College in 2010, the college started looking for providers.
Group Health Care (GHC) will be providing the health care at the clinic. The clinic is a 14 foot by 74 foot trailer and has exam rooms, a waiting room, and an accessible bathroom.
With construction going on at the college there were limited options for locations of the trailer. The old outdoor basketball court in front of the building was originally intended to be the location of the trailer. However, due to the construction happening out front, that area could not be an option going forward.
“Once you walk in the trailer, it’ll look like a health care clinic at any building,” Vesterdahl said.
At the clinic, visitations will be free, with funding for the clinic coming from the Student Activities Board. There will be a nurse practitioner or physician’s assistant on hand in the clinic, and students will have the opportunity to receive prescriptions while at the clinic.
Even though the typical check up will be free, students will have to pay fees for shots and vaccines. If students need additional care, they will be able to work with GHC representatives to seek the care they need.
“They won’t turn anyone away,” Vesterdahl said.
Current students at Madison campuses with their OneCard will have access to the clinic. Students will eventually have the option to sign up for appointments online, however there will be walk-ins allowed.
After the Allied Health Building is completed in front of the building, it is planned that the services in the trailer will move to the new health building.
There is parking available next to the trailer for students that need health care attention. To get to the building, turn northbound onto Wright St., pass the two crosswalks and turn on the service road adjacent to Truax.
