The Student Ambassadors started a snack drive to help reduce the impact of the budget cuts on the child care center. They have a schedule of what to donate, but all donations will be accepted any time.
Jodi Hewitt, one of the ambassadors, has taken the lead on this project. She created sandwich boards designed like cereal boxes for the ambassadors to wear to promote the drive. She even had her daughter, Jenny, age 3, involved and dressed up in a fancy cereal dress.
Renee Alfano, the supervisor for the Student Ambassadors, brought the need to group’s attention during the last meeting. She received an email from Cigdem Unal, director of the childcare center. It was agreed upon that the Student Ambassadors would help.
“Love, food and shelter are the things that people need the most,” Hewitt said. “I’m familiar with it because I do this kind of thing at my church. Helping kids is a no-brainer. I have five children so I know that taking care of children is a number one priority.”
They are planning to keep close ties with Unal and are trying to help whenever the need is there throughout the school year. The donation schedule includes: cereal starting Sept. 26, crackers on Oct. 3, fruit on Oct. 10, and bars on Oct. 17.
