After the first of the year hits, it is natural for people to think of that day in the middle of April when that sometimes dreaded paperwork is due.
On April 15, taxes are due and everyone has an obligation to fill out the tax forms by that date. However, going to a specialist out in whatever community you live in or nearby you might be a hassle with work, school, family life and whatever else Madison Area Technical College students deal with daily.
Are you ready? Do you have a plan to get your taxes taken care of? If not, there may be resources around that you just may not know about yet. One resource is available at Truax campus for Madison College students. A service that has been offered at the college for six years, there are individuals from the Accounting department on campus that can help out students with tax preparation and filing their taxes.
William Padley, an accounting instructor at the college, coordinates the service at Truax. The service is meant as a way to give students real world experience at preparing tax returns. Many students on campus wouldn’t be able to pay for their taxes to be prepared and electronically filed professionally, Padley said.
“It’s a win-win situation for everybody,” he said.
This program will be offered every Tuesday afternoon from 12:30-3:30 PM, with exception for spring break, up to the federal tax deadline on April 15. There are six slots available every hour on the half hour.
Any students interested in receiving help preparing and filing taxes should call the Truax accounting lab at (608) 243-4310.
Students may also stop in at room E3649 for more information and to schedule an appointment. They will send all the information on which forms to fill out.
For the appointment, students will need to bring their W-2 form and whatever tax form they need to fill out with a representative from the lab.
A representative will also provide a sheet explaining everything. They will lay it all out for you so that you can get through this tax season in one piece.
