Student Senate is now accepting applications for its upcoming election. Five officer positions, including president, are open as well as five senator positions.

Kristin Zeier, the current vice president of public relations, said the Senate is looking for applicants who are “very motivated and self-starters, and are either really interested in leadership skills or already feel like they do have leadership skills.”

The mission of the Student Senate is to work collaboratively with students and college administrators to create positive changes in the Madison College community. They serve as a liaison between the student body and the college administration.

Zeier stressed that becoming a part of the Senate is a real commitment, reminding potential applicants that “you do have to commit 10 to 15 hours a week.”

But she said there are many perks to the job. Being a member of the Student Senate is a great way to meet new people and is a learning opportunity and resume booster.

The deadline for applications is April 11. Elections will be held April 24.

“We don’t have a lot of applicants yet but people tend to wait until the day before,” Zeier said.

The Senate understands students’ tendency to wait until the last minute to get their applications in, however, they encourage anyone who is interested and feels they are qualified to put their applications in as soon as possible. The positions of president, vice president of public relations, vice president of administration and finance, vice president of legislative affairs and vice president of team development and five senator positions are open.

Even if you aren’t interested in running for a position, Senate is always looking for student involvement.

“Everybody should get out there and vote,” Zeier said. “Student Senate does a lot of really important things, we work really hard all year and we look for ways we can improve the experience for other students. Always let us know if there is anything you think the college or we should be doing and also get involved.”
