Off The Shelf: AFI’s best films available in the library

Dana Ryals, Librarian

Make this year’s new-year resolution to watch all of the best American films. The American Film Institute (AFI), an organization that honors and celebrates the motion picture arts in the United States, has compiled a list of all the greatest American moments in cinema, and the Madison College Truax Library has been busy collecting some of them. Two different collections that the Madison College Libraries have compiled are the “AFI’s 100 Years… 100 Movies” and “AFI’s 10 top 10”.

AFI’s 100 Years… 100 Movies collection is a list of the top 100 American films of the past 100 years. This list was originally created in 1997, but was updated 10 years later to include new great films that had not yet been produced. The Madison College Libraries own all of the films in both the original and 2007 list. Visit the AFI website to find the complete list.

AFI’s 10 top 10 is a list of the top 10 films in 10 classic genres, including, Animation, Romantic Comedy, Western, Sports, Mystery, Fantasy, Sci-Fi, Gangster, Courtroom Drama, and Epic. All 100 of these films may be easily found at the Truax library.

If you are off campus, you can find them online by going to the Madison College Library’s homepage at https://libguides.madisoncollege.edu/library and either typing in a title of a specific film or typing in “AFI 100” or “AFI 10 top 10”. Another easy way to find the titles is to look for the stickers. The feature films at the Truax Library are just beyond the circulation desk, opposite the printers.

Each of the films that fits into these categories has a sticker on its spine denoting that is has made one of the lists. If you are closer to a different campus, you can fill out the interlibrary loan request form to have one of them sent to the Madison College Library of your choice.

Madison College also has an excellent collection of streaming films available through the newest database, called, Kanopy. Kanopy has films and documentaries in a Netflix-like website that is free for all Madison College students, faculty, and staff to enjoy.
