Libraries can help with lifelong learning

Brandon Whisenhunt, Librarian

Lifelong learning is self- initiated, self- directed education that involves the learner in educational pursuits throughout the duration of their lives. It requires a certain amount of curiosity and openness to novel experiences.
I believe that Madison College offers lifelong learners at all stages of their journey opportunities to advance their knowledge of the world by providing a place to engage in lifelong learning.
Madison College offers classes on everything from architecture to gender studies to welding. And students range from high school STEM students just beginning their colligate journey to older adults auditing classes for personal enrichment. The thing all these students have in common is an interest in their world.
I strongly believe in the concept of lifelong learning. And working at the library, I feel fortunate that I work in the hub of learning here at the college.
There are many reasons one would want to continue their education beyond the doors of school. Obviously lifelong learning prevents mental decline, such as Alzheimer’s and dementia as we age. It’s as important to exercise your brain as it is your body.
In addition, continuing your education both inside and outside of official channels can lead to enhanced job opportunities, as it makes you a more valuable employee. Madison College also offers a lot of more practical classes like cabinet making and photography.
And one should not discount the opportunity to connect with likeminded people studying and sharing the same interests. It is always good to have friends with shared interests!
If you’re interested in the importance of lifelong learning, check out a few books in the Madison College Libraries entitled “Range: Why Generalists Triumph in a Specialized World” by David Epstein, “Make It Stick: the Science of Successful Learning” by Peter Brown, and “Big Magic: Creative Living Beyond Fear” by Elizabeth Gilbert. All three examine lifelong learning and curiosity as ways to make our lives better and more fulfilling.
Finally, check out the link to the database LinkedIn Learning, available at https://libguides.madisoncollege.edu/FindArticles. It is free to you as a student and offers an opportunity for you to learn a wide range of skills beyond your immediate curricular needs.
