About a decade ago the National Tutoring Association launched National Tutor Appreciation Week to honor the work of tutors in learning centers, and in colleges and universities all over the country. This year, the week to honor tutors is Oct. 2 through Oct. 6.
The Student Achievement Center provides many hours of tutoring services in many subject areas, every day of the week, both in-person and online. You may have even seen embedded tutors in your classrooms.
This week is to honor those peer tutors, Supplemental Instruction leaders, Academic Engagement Partners (professional tutors), volunteer faculty tutors, and School of Academic Advancement faculty tutors that help students throughout the year.
The Student Achievement Centers operate at six Madison College campuses and online, with over 40 tutors, providing more than 400 hours per week of tutoring availability.
In our spring survey of students that used Student Achievement Center online tutoring, 100 percent said “I believe that tutoring services have helped me succeed” and “I would recommend the Student Achievement Center to another student.”
Whether you are struggling to understand a difficult concept in a course that you don’t love, but have to take, or are loving every second but just want to turn a B into an A, you can find a tutor to meet your needs.
Tutoring helps encourage higher-level thinking and improves self-esteem. It also helps students develop essential learning skills and critical thinking skills. Students who participate in tutoring services are more likely to graduate from college.
Oct. 2: Write a quilt square of thanks. Stop by the Truax Student Achievement Center all week long to write a personal message on a quilt square that we will stitch together as a visual representation of all of the thanks you gave to our tutors! If a tutor helped you succeed, let them know! There will also be a tree to add leaves with messages to your favorite tutors. Can’t make it to Truax? You can also leave thank you notes on our Padlet wall here: https://tinyurl.com/p4s5ypty
Oct. 3: Meet our tutors. Check out our wall of tutor photos and schedules all in one place at one time! If you’ve been to the SAC before, you know that you can always see at a glance of our daily schedule, who is on duty that day. Come look at our display that will show all tutors at once with all of their schedules and the many subjects they tutor in! Also stop by our table in the Truax Cafeteria Mall to find out more about Student Achievement Center services from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.
Oct. 4: Have a treat on us. Share a snack and a beverage with your favorite tutors or while you’re studying. Treats will be at Truax this day, but at the regional campuses when the most tutors are scheduled.
Oct. 5: Online learning day. Stop in or send a question to [email protected] to find out more about our online tutoring services and Brainfuse, another online tutoring option available to Madison College students.
Oct. 6: Study skills day. Stop by for some tip sheets on best practices for studying, or to ask our tutors about ways that you can improve your own study skills.
Whether it is during National Tutor Appreciation Week or any other time, we encourage you to stop in to get to know your Student Achievement Center staff, services, and tutors. You are welcome here.
