After 15 years as Director of Student Life, Renee Alfano is retiring at the end of this semester.
Alfano came to Madison College, the first time she led at a two-year college, having always served at a four-year college. It was a life-changing experience, cementing her commitment to the college and quickly becoming a leader and an example in the Student Life community.
She was inspired to pursue an educational career as a college student and do student things like attending different events, activities and athletics. While participating in many college activities, an educator asked her if she had considered pursuing this career.
She was a student teacher then, but she applied to graduate school, was accepted, and received an assistantship in student activities.
As a director of student life, Alfano’s primary role is to build and grow a student community through student groups, student clubs, events and activities, saying that research shows that students who feel more connected to the college are likelier to stick with it and complete their academic goals.
“We’re about retention and helping students build communities so they have a support system to stick with,” she said.
While she has always loved her role in Student Life, Alfano finds that she has many balls in the year, and it’s a good time to pass on the part to somebody younger with more energy.
She will be moving to Tennessee soon, where she and her husband are building a home. Her retirement years will allow her to spend more time reading, enjoying water sports, and appreciating a warmer climate.
Before coming to Madison College, Alfano spent most of her career at four-year colleges. She believes her most influential decision was to go to Madison College.
“I love the two-year college experience. I love these students — every day amazes me. And I wouldn’t say that if I didn’t believe it.”
Alfano encourages students to take advantage of everything the college offers even if they are not sure they are interested in it, saying that students are already paying for clubs and events, so now is the time to take advantage of different things.
The director of student life believes it is vital for the student to expand their horizons and persuade themselves to take advantage of things that may not have been available at their previous school.
“It might challenge you in a different way that will help you, whether on transfer applications, resume or scholarship applications. It broadens your horizons,” Alfano said.
She has met many students with many different challenges. Asked if she had any guidance to give the current and future students, Alfano said,
“Even though there are bumps in the road. You can get through it. It might not feel like it at the time, but you can do it, and you can get past those challenges and survive and thrive in your next step.”
When asked what advice she would give to the next director, Alfano said, “Students first. If it weren’t for the students, we wouldn’t be here.”
