There’s a good chance that by the time you are reading this, you may have already given up on some or all of your New Year’s resolutions. According to The Ohio State University’s Fisher School of Business, research suggests only 9% of Americans complete resolutions they make and 43% give up on them before the end of January.
Well, if any of the resolutions below are on your list, the Madison College Libraries and Student Achievement Centers would like to try to help you achieve them!
If your resolution had something to do with keeping your personal information safe and private online…
The online security library research guide https://libguides.madisoncollege.edu/onlinesecurity covers everything from dealing with computer viruses and email phishing to better passwords and privacy techniques. Use the subject terms “computer security” or “online safety” in our catalog to find helpful books and e-books.
If you’d rather watch than read, the library’s streaming video database Films on Demand has several informative videos on online security and privacy, and there are some terrific short videos on the topics at https://libguides.madisoncollege.edu/commoncraft.
If your resolution had something to do with learning more about how you can use artificial intelligence…
The new Generative AI library research guide https://libguides.madisoncollege.edu/generative-ai is a terrific introduction to using AI ethically in school and research. Searching the subject “artificial intelligence” yields many current books and e-books, such as the informative yet entertaining You look like a thing, and I love you. There’s also a lot of great videos about AI in Films on Demand.
If your resolution had something to do with balancing busy schedules with school, work, and family and keeping mentally healthy through it all…
Something worth taking a few minutes to look at might be the Student Mental Health library research guide https://libguides.madisoncollege.edu/mentalhealth. It provides many helpful tips on dealing with all the pressures we face, as well as links to services both inside the college and in the community for more help. If your resolution had something to do with learning another language or new life skills…
The library’s subscription database Mango Languages provides interactive, step-by-step lessons to learn a wide variety of languages.
Many similar language-learning programs you’ve seen commercials cost quite a bit to buy, but Mango is free to use for Madison College students.
Another library subscription database, LinkedIn Learning offers lessons and courses to learn business, software, tech, and creative skills to further your professional or personal goals.
Yet another database, LearningExpress Library, provides practice tests for many fields and general skills-building courses. These and other databases can be found at https://libguides.madisoncollege.edu/FindArticles.
