Spring break is just around the corner, and the Volunteer Center plans to turn the time off into a memorable volunteer experience for Madison College student volunteers.
In addition to semester long programs like WolfPack Volunteers and one-off volunteer experiences on Madison College campuses, the Volunteer Center has planned volunteering opportunities over school breaks for years. This spring break, volunteers will travel to Portage to support Habitat for Humanity in its mission of bringing people together to build homes, communities and hope.
Habitat for Humanity is a nationwide nonprofit organization. They take donations and resell them at a discount to make home improvement supplies like doors, lighting fixtures, and floor tiling more affordable. As another part of their mission, Habitat for Humanity connects with families and, with the support of volunteer workers, works to build the families houses of their own.
Fifteen Madison College volunteers will be spending their spring break in Portage, working with Habitat for Humanity on home repairs and a house build site. Participants will also learn more about the housing crisis in Wisconsin during the trip.
Signups opened on WolfPack Connect on Feb. 19, and all spots for the trip were filled in under 10 days. However, the Volunteer Center will host other events this semester, including an on-campus volunteering opportunity on National Student Volunteer Day, which is Thursday, March 7. More information is available on WolfPack Connect.
Additionally, Habitat for Humanity is always taking volunteers to work in their restore locations and on house building projects. Information and signup forms to get involved individually can be found on their website, https://habitatdane.org/volunteer/.
