In 2010, the National Tutoring Association launched National Tutor Appreciation Week to honor the work of tutors in learning centers, and in colleges and universities all over the country. This year, the week to honor our tutors is Oct. 7 through Oct. 11.
The Student Achievement Centers provide many hours of tutoring services in many subject areas, Monday through Friday, both in-person and online. You may have even seen embedded tutors or supplemental instruction leaders in your classrooms.
This week is to honor those peer tutors, supplemental instruction leaders, Academic Engagement Partners (professional tutors) and faculty tutors that help students throughout the year in the Student Achievement Centers.
The Student Achievement Centers operate at six Madison College campuses and online, with about 30 tutors, providing about 250 hours per week of tutoring availability.
In our spring 2024 survey of students, they said this about Student Achievement Center tutors:
• Thank you for creating a space like the Student Achievement Center, it has helped me greatly and I appreciate having access to a place like it.
• I use the tutoring services regularly and it has helped me tremendously.
• I love working with the tutors in the Student Achievement Center!
Whether you are struggling to understand a difficult concept in a course that you don’t love, but have to take, or are loving every second but just want to turn a B into an A, you can find a tutor to meet your needs.
If you haven’t considered tutoring services before, it isn’t too late! Tutoring helps encourage higher-level thinking and improves self-esteem. It also helps students develop essential learning skills and critical thinking skills. Students who participate in tutoring services are more likely to graduate from college.
Please join us in celebrating all our tutors’ contributions to the academic success of many Madison College students and to find out more about the tutoring services that are available for free to all Madison College students.
All week long, there will be activities on all campuses such as writing notes of thanks to your favorite tutors, snacks (at Reedsburg on Oct. 8, at Truax on Oct. 9), brain challenger puzzles, and an information table (Truax cafeteria at 11:30 a.m. on Oct. 7).
Stop by any campus’ Student Achievement Center for tips on best practices for studying, or to ask our tutors about ways that you can improve your own study skills.
While you’re here, ask us (or send a question to [email protected]) about our online tutoring services and Brainfuse, another online tutoring option available to Madison College students. Faculty and students are invited to drop in to find out how to participate in Student Achievement Centers’ services.
Whether it is during National Tutor Appreciation Week or any other time, we encourage you to stop in to get to know your Student Achievement Center staff, services and tutors. You are always welcome here.
