The anniversary of 9/11 was memorialized this semester at Lussier Student Plaza. Small flags were planted upon the hill, each one representing those who lost their lives 23 years ago.
Organized by the Student Senate, this year’s Remembrance event was planned as part of the Protective Emergency and Human Services week. Members of both the Student Senate and the Veteran’s Club, along with other volunteers, gathered early on the morning of Sept. 10 to plant flags, place posters and erect signs containing information about the tragedy.
Passing students took the opportunity to plant a flag on the hill. Many were added throughout the event.
The 9/11 Stair Stepper Event, organized by the Madison College Veterans Club, was also planned as part of Protective Emergency and Human Services week.
The Stair Stepper Event is a stair master challenge created to honor the sacrifices of the courageous public servants that day. With these stair steppers, students/faculty simulate the 110 floors of the World Trade Center.
The Remembrance event has been run at Madison College since at least 2017. For the last two years it’s been run by Student Senate, but previously it was organized by Phi Theta Kappa.
“I believe it’s important because it’s a show of unity. It’s an opportunity for us to come together as a community and support those who were impacted and remember those who lost their lives that day,” said Student Senate advisor Cole Kallio-Crotteau when asked about the events importance.
The flags were removed on Sept. 12.
