Greetings WolfPack and welcome to Madison College! My name is Kai Brito and I am the Student Senate president for the 2024-25 school year. I take great pride in serving the student body by making the student voice heard and creating necessary change to improve the student experience at Madison College.
Overall, Student Senate makes our very best effort to actively show up on campus, whether that means hosting Town Halls to gather student feedback, working with college administration to create changes within the system or supporting community events hosted by student organizations and clubs.
As a Senate, we meet every Thursday evening throughout the semester to work on legislative issues to advance student interests on our campus.
We collectively made a promise to focus on three major goals of our organizational three-year plan: 1) Campus Sustainability Operations, 2) Regional Campus Outreach & Advocacy and 3) Alumni Relations.
Specifically, here are the ideas we hope to advance this year on behalf of all students:
• Creating a Student Life position for student-focused Sustainability Programming, which could include Earth Day, Sustainability Week, Global Climate Change Week, recycling educational seminars, Solar Panel Array tours, Food Waste Solutions demonstrations and many other potential ideas for what we could be doing for environmental issues on our Madison College campus.
• Fostering collaborations between Programs & Activities Council and Regional Campus managers to enhance Student Senate involvement on the Commercial Avenue, Goodman South, Watertown, Fort Atkinson, Reedsburg and Portage campuses.
• Setting the groundwork for a college-wide collective discussion on the potential creation of a Madison College Alumni Association.
• Ensuring transparency and active communication around academic programming decisions from administrative Deans, particularly regarding the transition from in-person to online class modality, and ensuring in-person offerings for core coursework in each academic program.
• Granting students eligibility to serve on Hiring Committees for Student Activities Fee-Funded positions, which had previously been allowed, but was restricted for unknown reasons some time during the COVID period.
• Updating the Student Activities Board bylaws to create “Lines of Consistency” that would outline the budget-approval process and make the allocation process more equitable for all students.
• Exploring the compensation structure for Student Organization positions to create more equitable payout amounts for student jobs on campus.
If you liked any of the ideas that you read above, or if you think we could be doing something more on Student Senate, please send us an email <[email protected]> and we will make sure your voice is heard.
Please feel free to stop down by Student Life, knock on the Student Senate door, and talk with us. And most importantly, be proud of your decision to join the WolfPack and build your community at Madison College.
