Working in groups can be challenging, especially for those who prefer one-on-one meetings. In group meetings, you can practice the skills it takes to achieve success when working with others. Students who participate in group activities develop better organization skills and improve the ability to coordinate key details to support their goals.
There are four values to joining a group or organization.
Maintaining personal responsibility. You’ll get to learn to manage your time properly and learn how to prioritize and manage different tasks.
Critical thinking. Collaborative learning can help improve critical thinking skills. Studying in groups allows you to share ideas and thoughts about a specific subject. When ideas are shared in groups, you get to form different perspectives from other students when tackling problems or solutions.
Gaining experience with a team. Many volunteering opportunities and employers require leadership skills. Practice being a leader in your team. For example, visitors at Madison College on a campus tour deserve to have the best experience. It could be one’s responsibility to lead the entrance or exit way, or even a group. Practicing leadership skills in groups can earn such experience.
Listening with intent. As you communicate and share your ideas within a group, you also get to listen to other students’ ideas, which allows you to practice active listening with intent.
Group learning is the preferred method in education and professional settings. It prepares one for future goals while learning alongside your peers and creates a bond.
