In 1995, Adam Sandler wrote and starred in “Billy Madison,” in which he plays a 27-year-old who had to repeat all 12 grades in a few short weeks.
The smash-hit streaming series, “Schitt’s Creek,” features a storyline where Alexis Rose, the adult sister of David, must return to high school.
At 55 years old, I consider myself old. I also think of myself as a lifelong learner. Indeed, my New Berlin ‘87 high school class voted me Most Likely to Become a Professional Student.
Although in fall of 2022, 23 percent of undergraduate students were over the age of 25, it can feel daunting to return to a learning mode at this time in my life. It’s unexpected. Maybe even thought to be against the natural order of things.
There are multiple paths in life. I enjoy people younger than myself. Perhaps I am immature, but I prefer to be labeled open-minded.
While I have wisdom from lived experience, youth have vitality. I believe we can all learn together and from each other.
Madison College has a wide range of ages in its student body, with the average age being 29. I personally have found it to be a very welcoming community of all kinds of learners.
