At a recent event held at the H. Douglas Redsten gym of Truax Campus, the Madison Area Technical College athletic department hosted the 46th annual Athletic Awards Banquet. At this event, student-athletes and coaches were honored for their achievements on and off the field.
Mike Van Veghel, an athletic trainer and instructor, was honored with the Doug Redsten Memorial Service Award.
Two basketball players, Mya Flentje and Derrick Nillissen, were presented the award of Madison College Sports people of the Year for performances for their respective teams.
Flentje, a point guard for the Lady WolfPack, led the team with 124 assists, 92 steals, and 1083 minutes played on the season.
Nillisen, a point guard for the men’s team, recorded a team high 34 percent three point shooting percentage (minimum 10 attempts). He finished the season with 267 points, 78 rebounds, 44 assists, and 20 steals.
Jon Gruenenfelder, a former basketball player, assistant women’s basketball coach, and Fitness Center Supervisor was inducted into the Hall of Fame. In his two seasons as a player, Gruenenfelder led the team in assists and steals and achieved academic all-conference honors. He was also named the Sportsperson of the Year following the 1991-92 season. After his career as a player,
Gruenenfelder returned to the college to coach. In his three years with the Lady WolfPack, the team won three consecutive conference and state championships. In additon, the team finished as regional runners-up all three years and qualified for the national tournament for the first time in school history in 1997.
