Wide range of intramural sports offered for students
October 4, 2014
Madison College offers a diverse range of extracurricular activities throughout the school year. A lot of students don’t have the time to fully dedicate themselves to such activities because of how time consuming they tend to be. One great way to be apart of school activities without having to set aside too much time is to get involved in Madison College’s intramural sports.
“It’s a great way to enjoy a recreational sport without having to try out. It’s also a good way to stay active and meet a lot of new people that you probably wouldn’t have met if it wasn’t through these sports,” said Jay Castle, of the intramural sports department. “No matter what your skill level is, it’s a great way to have a good time and play a sport you enjoy.”
Madison College also gives students an opportunity to participate in a wide variety of intramural sports. The co-ed intramural sports offered are basketball, dodgeball, volleyball, rock climbing, and badminton. There’s also a one time bowling tournament that will be held Thursday, Nov. 13.
Joining a team or sport is free, but students must have at least one degree credit course to be able to participate, which is the same to be able to use any of the fitness facilities. The most popular sports people participate in tend to be basketball and volleyball.
Basketball is a full 5-on-5 game and typically has about 16 teams. Volleyball has typically 8-10. Students can merely show up the day of and be placed on a team, if they have not already elected to be on one. Both basketball and volleyball will be officiated, making it fair and competitive. Stats will be kept throughout the season in both sports to give it an even more legitimate feel of a real game. T-shirts will be provided to teams to give it a full team and league atmosphere.
Student can also try indoor rock climbing through intramurals. Passes to Boulders Climbing Gym are available for a $5, a substantial discount from the regular day pass price ($18). Boulders is located on 3964 N. Commercial Avenue, just a few blocks from campus. Visit the athetic desk at Truax to pick up a pass, and try a new sport.
Registering is easy through the “IMLeagues” website. “IMLeagues” also offers its official Smartphone app, REC*IT, which allows you to view scheduling, game results, and team stats.
Intramural sports is definitely a great way to be apart of an overall fun, active environment, without having to be restrained by the time consumption of other extracurricular activities.
