Bucks have youthful optimism with new coach
October 16, 2014
Since the beginning of the 2014 offseason, the NBA has made multiple headlines in the news. LeBron James’ departure from Miami back to his home in Ohio, and the highly anticipated 2014 draft with two of the best prospects since LeBron James himself was drafted, are just a few noteworthy examples.
The Milwaukee Bucks had one of the worst regular seasons in NBA history this past year, which made it possible to draft one of these prospects. The Bucks entered the NBA draft lottery with a 25 percent chance at getting the first pick. But with extraordinary luck, the Cleveland Cavaliers, with a 1 percent chance, claimed the No. 1 pick. The Cavs ended up taking Andrew Wiggins out of the University of Kansas, which left the Bucks no choice but to take Jabari Parker out of the University of Duke. Parker was undoubtedly the most polished overall player in the draft, and for the Bucks, it’s exactly what they needed.
This year looks promising for the Bucks. There are new faces all around the historic organization. They have new owners, a new coach, and hopefully a new face to the franchise. Ten-time NBA all-star, Jason Kidd, will be the new coach for the young team. Kidd spent his first season coaching last year with the Brooklyn Nets, but with a disappointing end to the season, he found himself seeking a new opportunity with the Bucks.
Kidd had this to say about his departure from the Nets to the Bucks:
“Well, I think the business side takes place a lot of times,” Kidd told Chris Broussard of ESPN. “We talk about the game, but sometimes the business gets in the way. Brooklyn thought that they could do better in the sense of Milwaukee having interest, and them okaying it, and then the two owners finding a way to make a deal.”
Kidd garners a lot of respect from many of the players in the NBA, being that only two years ago he was playing against many of them. He is a future hall-of-famer and has a prestigious résumé to back up his knowledge of the game. He has spoke very highly of Parker’s basketball skills, being only a 19 years old and a rookie, along with his overall dedication to get better each and every.
The Bucks overall have an average age of 24 years old, making them the youngest team in the NBA. Giannis Antetokounmpo is probably the next best prospect on the Bucks aside from Parker. Antetokounmpo is the same age as Parker, but about three inches taller with a similar skill-set. Kidd has expressed an interested in having him bring the ball up and play some point guard. This would be very uncommon for a 6-foot-11-inch player to have the ball handling ability to do, which makes his nickname “the Greek Freak” so much more suitable.
The Bucks have an intriguing group of guys that may not make much noise in the upcoming season, but could be a very formidable group in the coming years.
Hopefully Kidd can bring this group together and Larry Sanders can play at the level he did two seasons ago, which will lead to a surprising playoff push for an unexpected, inexperienced team.
