A super matchup
Quarterbacks make it easy to predict a great game
February 3, 2021
It is embarrassing to see that both my AFC and NFC champion picks were wrong. It turns out, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers beat the Green Bay Packers and the Kansas City Chiefs beat the Buffalo Bills.
Any Super Bowl game is special, but I think this game is more special because of the quarterback matchup. Fans will get to see the best quarterback of all time in Tampa Bay’s Tom Brady against the best quarterback of the future in Kansas City’s Patrick Mahomes.
Brady is 45 years old, while Mahomes is only 25 years old. Brady is the 2019 Super Bowl champion, while Mahomes is the 2020 Super Bowl champion. It is difficult to see another matchup like this ever again.
Both quarterbacks had great regular seasons. Here’s how they compare over the season:
Brady: 401 completions, 610 atempts, 4,633 passing yards, 40 touchdowns 12 interceptions, 102.2 quarterback rating, 30 carries with 6 rushing yards and three touchdowns.
Mahomes: 390 completions, 588 attempts, 4740 yards, 38 touchdowns, six interceptions, 108.2 quarterback rating, and 62 carries with 308 rushing yards and two touchdowns.
Both had a tremendous regular season. Mahomes’ stats look a little bit more impressive, but it is also the first season that Brady was playing with the Buccaneers, so I would say it is equal in terms of both quarterback’s skills.
Now, let’s look at the past Super Bowl history and how it turns out. The current line is Kansas City -3 (which means Kansas City is expected to win by 3 points) and the over/under 56.5 (which means the projected combined score is expected to be 56.5 points).
The past two years, the favored team has won and the point total was under the projected line. Will that happen again to make it three years in a row?
That seems unlikely, which is why I predicted it will be the underdog (Tampa Bay) and over this time.
One of my friends said, “Brady is the NFL’s hero. Who doesn’t deserve 10 Super Bowl wins?” I do think that Brady will win at least another Super Bowl with his new team.
The following is our Clarion staff’s prediction on the game. We all expect some high scoring, but Paige and I are the only ones who believe in Brady.
Let’s see how it turns out!
