The Madison College volleyball team got to test itself against some of the top competition in the area at a tournament it hosted on Sept. 20-21.
Half of the volleyball teams playing in the Madison College tournament on Sept. 20-21 were ranked in the most recent NJCAA Division II poll.
They included No. 7 Iowa Central, No. 14 Illinois Central, No. 25 Milwaukee Area Technical College and No. 21 Madison College.
Although Madison College lost to both Iowa Central and Illinois Central, the matches were evenly played and the WolfPack showed it belongs among the top teams in the nation.
Madison College now stands at 10-4 overall, having won two matches and lost two matches at its recent tournament.
After hosting Milwaukee Area Technical College on Sept. 24, the WolfPack will play in the Parkland Community College tournament on Sept. 27-28.
Iowa Central 3, Madison College 1
Iowa Central prevailed in a closely-fought match against Madison College to close the tournament on Sept. 21, winning, 25-23, 22-25, 25-17 and 26-24.
Courtney Gorum and Addyson McHugh led the WolfPack with 12 kills, while Brooke Anderson had 22 assists. Defensively, MaKayla Weisner had four blocks and Cora Webster had 25 digs.
Illinois Central 3, Madison College 2
Madison College took two of the first three sets against Illinois Central but lost the final two sets, giving Illinois a 21-25, 25-16, 18-25, 25-18 and 15-10 victory on Sept. 21.
Gorum led the WolfPack with 12 kills, while Amber Horn had five blocks. Anderson added 21 assists, while Webster had 20 digs in the match.
Madison College 3, Spoon River 0
Madison College dominated Spoon River College with a 25-21, 25-10 and 25-20 sweep on Sept. 20. Gorum had 18 kills and two blocks to lead the WolfPack, while Webster added 21 digs and Sammy Johnson had 20 assists.
Madison College 3, Lincoln Land 2
Madison College opened its tournament on Sept. 20 with a five-set victory over Lincoln Land College, winning 25-22, 24-26, 25-22, 20-25 and 15-8. Gorum led the WolfPack with 23 kills, while Anderson had 23 assists. Weisner had three blocks and Webster added 27 digs.
Madison College 3, Triton College 0
The WolfPack service game was key against Triton College on Sept. 13, with 18 aces in the match leading to a 25-22, 26-9 and 25-18 victory. McHugh led the way with 10 aces, becoming the fifth player in school history to reach that mark and falling one ace shy of tying the record. Gorum had 12 kills and two blocks, while McHugh added 10 kills and 7 digs.
Madison College 3, Joliet Junior College 0
Despite a close second set, Madison College recorded a 25-14, 26-24 and 25-19 sweep over visiting Joliet Junior College on Sept. 13. Gorum led the team with 13 kills in 29 attempts, while Bella Vitaioli added nine. Setters Tricia Klum and Brooke Anderson each had 19 assists.
Madison College 3, Highland Community College 1
A close, four-set match saw Madison College defeat visiting Highland Community College, 25-20, 21-25, 26-24 and 25-18, on Sept. 7. Gorum led the way offensively with 23 kills, while McHugh added 13. Klum had 43 assists in the match, while Vitaioli had four aces.
Madison College 3, Bryant and Stratton College 0
Madison College defeated visiting Bryant and Stratton in straight sets, 25-18, 25-22 and 25-23, on Sept. 7. Gorum led a balanced attack with 13 kills, while McHugh and Vitaioli both had seven. Emma Carpenter led the team with four blocks, while Mackenzie Thom had 17 digs.
