The Madison College women’s basketball team has a many reasons to be optimistic about the 2024-25 season – namely the large number of incoming players who make up the majority of the team.
Last season saw the WolfPack struggle to field a team, playing the final 11 games with just five healthy players on the roster. Three of them were athletes from the women’s soccer program who joined to help keep the season going.
The depth and talent of this year’s team makes Coach Angel Whetstone optimistic that her second year as coach will be much different than the first, when the team won only one game all season and lacked bench relief.
Madison College has already shown it will be highly competitive this season.
After opening the season with a 82-71 loss to McHenry County College on Nov. 2, Madison College scored a 73-68 victory over Waubonsee Community College on Nov. 7.
In both games, the WolfPack scored more than 70 points, a feat it only accomplished once last season.
Three true freshman led Madison College in scoring in its loss to McHenry County College.
Aubrey Maass scored 19 points including three, three-point field goals to lead the team. A guard from Montello, Maass also hit three free throws.
Keelyn Zwirschitz nearly posted a double-double in her first career game. A guard from Antigo, she had 13 points and nine rebounds. She converted on 6 of the 12 shots she took.
Hannah Solie, a guard from Chetek, added 11 points, two assists and two steals.
The victory over Waubonsee Community College snapped a 21-game losing streak for Madison College. It was keyed by an 18-2 run during the fourth quarter that gave the WolfPack enough of a lead to survive a late surge by Waubonsee.
Four players scored in double figures to lead Madison College.
Maass scored 19 points, including four three-pointers, to lead the team. Dani Latz, a freshman forward from Bloomer, hit 6 of 9 shots and 4 of 5 free throws to total 16 points.
Second-year guard Camilla Hauser, who missed her freshman year due to injury, came off the bench to score 12 points. Zwirschitz added 11 points and four rebounds.
Madison College has four home games remaining this month, starting with a game against College of Lake County on Nov. 13 at 5:30 p.m. Next up will be Black Hawk Technical College at 5:30 p.m. on Nov. 20 and Kishwaukee College at 1 p.m. on Nov. 23.
