A cold-shooting third and fourth quarter proved costly as Madison College saw a close game get out of reach in an 86-68 loss to visiting North Iowa Area Community College on Feb. 8. The loss dropped the WolfPack to 9-13 overall this season.
Madison College shot over 50 percent in the first half, and entered the half trailing by only four points at 51-47.
But the WolfPack hit just 5 of 16 shots in the third quarter and 3 of 17 shots in the fourth quarter and was unable to keep pace with North Iowa.
Keelyn Zwirschitz scored 17 points to lead Madison College, including three 3-point field goals. Maia Ellis added 14 points and seven rebounds, while Dani Latz had 13 points and 12 rebounds.
Madison College has one home game remaining during the regular season, when it hosts the College of DuPage on Feb. 15 at 1 p.m. The region 4 tournament will begin on Feb. 27.
Bryant & Stratton 63, Madison College 56
A fourth-quarter rally came up short for Madison College as the WolfPack fell to Bryant & Stratton College, 63-56, on Feb. 6. Madison College trailed by as much as 20 points late in the third quarter, but fought back the entire fourth quarter to get within 58-53 with 1:24 left to play.
Latz led the WolfPack with 16 points, seven rebounds, three assists and two steals. Jaida Gaskins scored 13 points, while Ellis had 11 points and eight rebounds.
Madison College 60, Joliet Junior College 52
A victory over Joliet Junior College at home on Feb. 4 gave the Madison College women’s basketball team its most wins since the 2019-20 season. Gaskins and Latz led the WolfPack to the 60-52 victory.
Gaskins posted her fourth-straight double-digit scoring game, scoring 11 of her 16 points in the first half. She finished the game with a career best four 3-pointers. Latz recorded her 16th double-double of the season, scoring 12 points and grabbing 12 rebounds. She also blocked four shots during the game.
Hannah Solie and Zwirschitz both scored nine points for the WolfPack, while Maia Ellis had a career-best 11 rebounds.
Carl Sandburg College 68, Madison College 59
A big third quarter provided enough of a margin for Carl Sandburg to withstand Madison College’s fourth-quarter rally to give the visitors a 68-59 win. The WolfPack was outscored 27-19 in the third quarter to fall behind by 14 points. They closed to within seven points with three minutes left but couldn’t get any closer.
Zwirschitz led Madison College with 17 points, the 11th time this season she has scored in double figures. Gaskins added 15 points and added three rebounds, two assists and a block. Latz was held to eight points, but had a team-best 11 rebounds.
Madison College 80, Harper College 33
Madison College held visiting Harper College to 10 points in the first half and raced away with an 80-33 victory on Jan. 28. It was the second-straight lopsided victory for the WolfPack.
Five players scored in double figures for Madison College, led by Gaskins who had 15 points, five rebounds and four steals. Latz and Solie both scored 14 points, with Latz adding 11 rebounds for another double-double. Ellis got her first double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds.
Madison College 86, Illinois Valley Community College 25
In need of a win after four straight losses, Madison College posted its largest-margin victory since 2019 as it beat Illinois Valley Community College, 86-25, at home on Jan. 25. Gaskins led four players in double figures as the WolfPack posted its second highest point total of the season.
Gaskin scored 23 points and had a career best eight steals in the game. Solie added 16 points, including four three pointers. Latz had 16 points and 15 rebounds, while Zwirschitz added 15 points and seven rebounds.
