A season of improvement for the Madison College women’s basketball team wrapped up on Feb. 27, with a loss in the Region 4 Division II Women’s Basketball Tournament Quarterfinals.
Madison College fell to host Carl Sandburg College, 76-47, despite a career high scoring performance from freshman Keelyn Zwirschitz, who netted a team-high 23 points.
Carl Sandburg took control of the game in the second quarter, outscoring Madison College, 32-8, to take a 45-21 halftime lead.
Madison College, which was limited to just five available players for the game due to injury, was unable to rally any closer than 20 points in the second half.
Zwirschitz got her 23 points on 9 of 17 shooting, including a pair of free throws. It was her second game scoring 20 or more points this season.
Dani Latz scored 13 points and had seven rebounds and three blocked shots. The freshman forward finished the season with a team-high scoring average of 14.4 points a game and rebound average of 11.8 a game.
Madison College finished the year with an 11-17 record, marking a 10-win improvement for coach Angel Whetstone’s squad. It was the first time since the 2019-2020 season that the WolfPack had posted double-digit wins.
Madison College 45, College of DuPage 41
Hannah Solie scored 19 points to lead Madison College to a 45-41 victory over College of DuPage on Feb. 20 to wrap up the regular season with a victory. Solie hit five 3-point shots for the second time this season.
Zwirschitz added 10 points for the WolfPack and had seven rebounds, three steals and two assists. Latz scored nine points and had a team-high 13 rebounds.
Madison College 72, Milwaukee Area Technical College 62
Four players scored in double figures as Madison College beat Milwaukee Area Technical College, 72-62, on Feb. 18 to end a four-game losing streak. The win was the 900th in program history.
Solie led the team with 19 points, while Maia Ellis and Jaida Gaskins both added 15 points. Zwirschitz scored 11 points, while Latz had nine points and 13 rebounds.
College of DuPage 70, Madison College 56
A 23-point effort by Dani Latz wasn’t enough for Madison College to overcome College of DuPage in their final home game of the season on Feb. 15. Latz posted her 20th double-double of the season, grabbing 10 rebounds in addition to her career-high point total.
The only other WolfPack player in double figures was Jaida Gaskins, who scored 11 points and had six rebounds.
Rock Valley College 88, Madison College 70
Two Madison College players posted double-doubles, but Rock Valley still posted an 88-70 victory over the visiting WolfPack on Feb. 13.
Dani Latz and Maia Ellis both had double-doubles, with Ellis scoring 14 points and grabbing 13 rebounds and Latz scoring 13 points and grabbing 12 rebounds. Solie also scored 10 points including a pair of 3-pointers.
