Although they’re not ranked nationally at this point, the Madison College softball team has been tearing through the competition lately.
The WolfPack won eight straight games after returning from its spring break trip to South Carolina before dropping a doubleheader to Kankakee Community College on April 6. The team now has a 16-5 overall record.
The team’s only other losses this season were against St. Charles Community College, which completes at the NJCAA Division I level, and Louisburg College, which is ranked No. 6 in Division 2.
Madison College’s eight-game winning streak included games that were decided by the run rule. So far this season, the WolfPack has outscored its opponents by a whopping 152-73.
Raegen Schwarz leads the team in batting with .448 average, and she has had two triples and nine doubles. Brooke Anderson is next with a .431 average. She has 22 hits in 51 at bats, including a home run and two doubles. Rylee Rogers is hitting .400 with one triple and two doubles, while Ava Stahl is batting .357 with five triples.
On the mound, the team has been led by pitchers Kendall Weik and Brooke Steinhorst. Weik has a 7-2 record with a 2.05 earned run average, allowing just 17 earned runs in 58 innings pitch. She has struck out 73 batters and walked just 17. Steinhorst has a 6-3 record and a 2.59 earned run average. She has struck out 39 batters in 54 innings pitched.
Madison College will be at home again on April 15, when it hosts Bryant & Stratton College for a doubleheader starting at 3 p.m.
Madison College 6, College of DuPage 3
Brooke Anderson had three hits and three runs batted in to lead Madison College past College of DuPage, 6-3, in the first game of a doubleheader at home on April 4.
Madison College jumped out front 3-0 in the bottom of the first inning thanks to a two-run double by Raegen Schwarz. After DuPage tied the game in the top of the fifth inning, the WolfPack regained the lead with Anderson’s two-run double.
Madison College 13, College of DuPage 2
A 10-run first inning for Madison College put DuPage away early in a 13-2 five-inning run-rule victory for the WolfPack in the second game of the doubleheader. The WolfPack had 11 hits in the inning, including a triple by Stahl and a double by Schwarz. Steinhorst pitched the win and allowed just two runs, both in the first inning, while striking out four.
Madison College 8, South Suburban College 0
Brooke Steinhorst pitched a two-hit shutout in an 8-0 Madison College victory over South Suburban College in the first game of a doubleheader at home on March 28. Steinhorst struck out eight batters in the victory. Leading hitters for the WolfPack were Rogers, Anderson and Kendall Weik, each with two hits. Steinhorst and Weik both hit doubles.
Madison College 8, South Suburban College 4
The second game of the doubleheader saw Madison College score in every inning but one to hold off South Suburban College, 8-4. Stahl had three hits, including two triples. Schwarz, Anderson and Tailer Bartelt each had two hits. Weik pitched the win, allowing four runs and striking out 13 batters.
Madison College 15, Waubonsee CC 1
Madison College dominated the first game of a doubleheader at Waubonsee Community College on March 27, winning 15-1 in a five-inning run-rule game. The WolfPack had 17 hits in the game, including seven extra-base hits.
Anderson had three hits, including a home run, and six runs batted in. Tristen Young had three hits, including a double, while Bartelt had two doubles. Weik pitched the victory, allowing four hits.
Madison College 11, Waubonsee CC 5
Madison College was held in check for the first two innings of the second game, but then the offense came alive in a 11-5 victory over Waubonsee. The WolfPack scored twice in the third inning to tie the game and then three times in the fourth, sixth and seventh inning to seal the win.
Bartelt, Stahl and Steinhorst led the team with three hits.
