After a dominant victory in its first match of the NJCAA Division II Region 4 volleyball tournament, top-seeded Madison College got tripped up in the semifinals by seventh-seeded Carl Sandburg College.
Madison College opened the semifinal match with a 25-13 first-set victory over Carl Sandburg College in Redsten Gymnasium on Nov. 9. It was an opponent the WolfPack had swept, 3-0, earlier in the season.
But the next three sets all went Carl Sandburg’s way, as they won 25-21, 25-19 and 25-21. The 3-1 loss ended Madison College’s season and sent Carl Sandburg to the regional championship match against Milwaukee Area Technical College.
Outside hitter Courtney Gorum led Madison College with 15 kills and 23 digs. Addyson McHugh and Emma Carpenter both had three blocks in the match, while Brooke Anderson had 28 assists.
Madison College had little trouble in its first-round match on Nov. 6, dominating Bryant & Stratton College, 25-17, 25-18 and 25-10.
The WolfPack offense was led by McHugh and Gorum. McHugh had 13 kills in the match, while Gorum added 12. The 12 kills pushed Gorum’s career total past 800. She became the school’s all-time leader in kills earlier this season and finished her career with 815.
Bella Vitaioli added six kills and 10 digs for the WolfPack, while Amber Horn had six kills. Anderson finished the match with 24 assists.
Madison College finished the season 19-14 overall after winning 20 or more matches the past two season. Last year, it reached the regional championship before losing to Rock Valley College.
