Upon arriving at the Truax Camps this semester, you will notice that construction walls have popped up in the Gateway and D Block area, indicating that the college remodeling project is underway.
Madison College is creating a centralized hub for students to access financial aid, veterans benefits, enrollment-related questions, academic advising, student success, coaching, disability resource services, and the Dean of Student service areas. In partnership with transfer services, they are also creating an appointment service.
Dr. Keyimani L Alford, Associate Vice President of Student Access and Success, said the idea for building a centralized hub came after conducting student surveys and receiving feedback about their experiences.
Administration learned that while the students were utilizing student services, receiving student support both in the Gateway area, where they entered off Wright Street, and then also in the D Block space, where the center desk offered academic advising among other services, students were having to ping-pong between the two centers.
During last month’s renovations, the college temporarily relocated student services to the main Truax Gateway area and the Foundation Center (3591 Anderson Street) across Anderson Street from the main Truax campus.
To alleviate any confusion, Student Services has assigned a team of six to be present at both intake centers — the Truax Gateway, and the Foundation Centre to answer questions and guide students to their location.
The Student Services team will be the first contact experience for those seeking student services. Team members will be stationed at both the Foundation Centre and the Truax Gateway. The team will work between the two intake areas to address those processes, guiding students where they need to go. The Gateway area will stay open until the school completes and reopens the new student support services area.
Those team members are equipped and knowledgeable to help guide the students to various areas and answer questions.
For additional guidance, a team member outside Student Life will identify students needing questions answered or location guidance. There will be a team member for the first few months of the term until students acclimate. Alford realizes that despite the team members’ presence and signage, there may be confusion for the student population.
“The culture here in Madison College is that we’re here to service students, so anything that we can do to ease the anxiety that they might have coming into the space. So we’re going to make sure we’re helpful,” said Alford, who says that despite team presence, there may be initial uncertainty.
“Don’t be afraid to ask questions. We have colleagues who walk around the halls all the time. If they see someone, of course, we’re going to do our best to greet them. If we see that they are confused, we will ask them.”
Lawn signs and window films, signs posted around campus, and a mural wall will also provide insight into what is transpiring.
Alford emphasizes that students will have support both in the Foundation Building and the Gateway to answer their questions.
He also adds that while the Student Services area is under construction, he wants students to “get excited about what we’re creating because we created it for them. It’s going to be remarkable and amazing when it’s done. So be on the lookout for a new transformation and a new space that we are creating for them,” Alford said.
